Redstone Network Debuts, Powering Fully On- Chain Games on the Ethereum Network
As the Web3 ecosystem has continued to mature and grow, blockchain-based gaming has garnered immense mainstream traction. To this point, the market recently witnessed the launch of the Redstone Network, an Ethereum scaling network designed to power fully on-chain games and “autonomous worlds.”
Developed by Lattice, an engineering and product-focused company designed to scale the Ethereum network, Redstone has already rolled out its mainnet, ushering in a new breed of decentralized gaming experiences built directly on the blockchain. The project has been devised upon Optimism’s OP Stack scaling technology but has been significantly retooled and enhanced to meet the demanding requirements of on-chain gaming.
By embracing the inherent constraints and capabilities of blockchain technology, the Redstone Network aims to foster truly innovative gaming concepts that harmonize seamlessly with today’s burgeoning decentralized paradigm.
At its core, Redstone introduces several key innovations tailored for on-chain gaming. It features the first implementation of Plasma Mode, a novel data availability protocol co-developed by Lattice and OP Labs. Plasma Mode enables increased transaction throughput by leveraging an off-chain data availability provider while maintaining a permissionless Ethereum layer-1 feature that allows users to challenge suspicious inputs, ensuring robust security and transparency.
Complementing Plasma Mode is MUD, Lattice’s proprietary engine designed specifically for on-chain Ethereum games. MUD powers several launch titles on Redstone, including Lattice’s own tactical strategy game, Sky Strife, which draws inspiration from the classic Advance Wars series.
One of the most intriguing projects launching built atop the Redstone Network is DEAR, an experimental game incubated by ARPA Network. DEAR challenges players to nurture and shape the life of a digital entity through on-chain interactions and transactions. By creatively leveraging blockchain capabilities, DEAR blurs the lines between gaming, social experimentation, and interactive art, allowing players to explore the composability and extensibility of smart contracts.
Another captivating addition to Redstone’s lineup is This Cursed Machine, a fully on-chain sci-fi body horror fulfillment center simulator game developed by Moving Castles. The title promises to push the boundaries of on-chain gaming narratives by making use of puzzle-based mechanics.
Autonomous worlds and the empowerment of individual creativity
Beyond individual games, Redstone’s architecture is also designed to foster the creation of autonomous, decentralized worlds that can be governed by on-chain rules and logic. These digital realms can give rise to entirely new genres of gaming experiences, blending elements of virtual economies, simulation, and emergent gameplay. On the subject, Justin Gilbert, co-founder and CEO of Lattice, believes:
“Most of the time, when you fully embrace the medium or the system you’re building to, you tend to get more interesting results — and sometimes better harmonization — just purely from a product development perspective,”
That said, while the potential of on-chain gaming is immense, the path ahead is uncharted territory. “Most of the studios out there that have raised capital to build on-chain games — nobody knows if it’s actually going to be a valuable market,” Gilbert acknowledged.
However, the spirit of experimentation and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on-chain remains a driving force for many developers in this emerging space. To this point, projects like DF Ares, a community-driven revival of the beloved on-chain game Dark Forest, exemplify the collaborative and iterative nature of this ecosystem.
In brief, Dark Forest is a decentralized MMO space-conquest game, leveraging the power of zkSNARK, a sophisticated cryptographic tool. The game represents one of the first decentralized “incomplete-information” games, offering a unique blend of strategy and exploration in an infinite, procedurally generated universe.
Therefore, as the Redstone Network continues to muster global traction, it stands primed to serve as the perfect foundational base for developers to explore new gameplay mechanics, business models, and creative expressions that leverage the unique properties of blockchain technology — thus paving the way for a future where on-chain experiences push the boundaries of interactive entertainment. Interesting times ahead!
