Ben McKenzie, the actor who captured hearts as Ryan Atwood in the hit 2000s show The O.C., has turned his sights on a different kind of drama: the wild world of cryptocurrency. Recently, under a sunny sky at the first-ever KUT Festival in Austin, where he grew up, McKenzie took the main stage to share his concerns about risks.
Speaking with host David Brown from Texas Standard, McKenzie revealed his passion for true crime stories. “I’ve always loved true crime,” he said. “My favorite is what I call ‘stupid crime,’ where crooks get caught doing obvious bad things, sometimes even bragging about it on social media like tweets.”
McKenzie directed a powerful new film called Everyone is Lying to You for Money. It had its world premiere at SXSW London in 2025. The movie draws from his 2023 New York Times bestseller, Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, co-written with journalist Jacob Silverman.
In the doc, McKenzie dives deep into how promises quick riches but often hides scams. He points out classic signs of trouble, like unreal returns that sound too good to be true. Blockchain technology itself is innovative, offering secure, decentralized ledgers. But bad actors use hype around Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others to push frauds.
McKenzie warns that the industry preys on young men aged 18-29. A recent Pew Research Center study shows 42% of men in this group have bought, traded, or used . “It’s feeding on young men’s insecurities and wrong ideas about success,” McKenzie explained. “Men make easier targets for these schemes.”
Why this group? Social media ads promise fast wealth, playing on dreams of financial freedom. Influencers flaunt Lambos and mansions, but many are paid promoters. New investors chase high-risk tokens without understanding volatility. Blockchain’s anonymity helps scammers hide, making rug pulls and pump-and-dumps common.
McKenzie’s journey started at SXSW 2022. With a film crew, he spotted a booth for Celsius Network. They pitched it as “better than a bank.” Deposit your , get 15% guaranteed interest. McKenzie saw the danger right away—a textbook Ponzi scheme sign.
“We went over, I introduced myself, and the crew filmed it,” he recalled. “That CEO is now in jail for fraud. It was day one of shooting.”
What happened to Celsius? In 2022, it collapsed, freezing billions in user funds. Founder Alex Mashinsky faced charges for misleading investors. This case shows ‘s risks: centralized platforms can fail like banks, but without safety nets like FDIC insurance. Blockchain was meant to cut out middlemen, yet many projects rebuild them with more danger.
Everyone is Lying to You for Money rolls out nationwide. In Austin, catch screenings at Austin Film Society through May 5, with another on May 7. Check local listings for dates near you.
McKenzie pushes for “responsible legislation.” He wants rules to protect users from fraud while letting legit blockchain innovation grow. Think clear disclosure rules, audits for exchanges, and crackdowns on fake projects.
McKenzie honors his grandfather, Robert Schenkkan, who helped start KUT radio and pushed President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign the 1967 Public Broadcasting Act. This roots his fight in a tradition of truth-telling.
He also chatted with KUT’s Jerry Quijano on Austin Signal, diving deeper into pitfalls.
McKenzie’s work is a wake-up call. Here’s how to invest wisely:
Blockchain has real uses: fast cross-border payments, NFTs for art ownership, DeFi for loans. But scams steal billions yearly. FTX’s 2022 crash wiped $8 billion. Stay alert.
bridges Hollywood and finance to spotlight . His documentary isn’t anti-blockchain—it’s pro-truth. As grows to trillions in market cap, education beats hype. Watch the film, read the book, and invest smart. The next could be tomorrow—don’t get caught.
