Cryptocurrency for good: UNICEF France now accepts donations in Cryptocurrencies

United Nations Internation Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) France division has started accepting donations in cryptocurrencies, after the successful execution of raising funds through Ethereum mining. The campaign was known as the “GameChaingers” and was launched in Feb 2018.

GameChaingers, a UNICEF France initiative, asked the gaming community of the world to mine Ethereum using their graphics cards to help the children of Syria. The campaign was a success, with 85 ETH being mined in 59 days, with 1 ETH having a value of $750.

With the success of GameChaingers, UNICEF France is making another move into cryptocurrency space, by accepting cryptocurrency donations. Currently, UNICEF will accept 9 cryptocurrencies, which includes, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Monero, EOS and Stellar.

According to Sébastien Lyon, Executive Director of UNICEF France,

Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology for charitable purposes offer a new opportunity to appeal to the generosity of the public and continue to develop our actions with children in our country of intervention. It is an innovation in terms of solidarity and fundraising that we are still few to propose, but which tends to become more democratic.

The rise of Cryptocurrency Donations

The ease of use of cryptocurrencies for international payments has made cryptocurrencies a good choice for donations, especially where proper financial establishments are not functioning. Reddit user “Window7733” was able to raise thousands of dollars from the Nano community to help is people in Venezuela and The Ocean Cleanup project started accepting cryptocurrency donations.

In the recent times, people living in a war-torn region of Gaza are using Bitcoins to pay for their daily meals, and many NGO and humanitarian aids are sending Bitcoins to help them.
