Ethereum is the 5th Fastest Growing Open Source Project on Github

Ethereum’s Go-Ethereum Client also known as Geth is the fifth fastest growing open source project on Github.

Github is one of the largest Open Source development platforms where usually most developers contribute to the open source Blockchain projects. Ethereum undoubtedly has the largest developer mindshare in the Cryptocurrency space. How large you ask?

Github has released its annual ‘State of the Octoverse’ report which ranks Ethereum’s Geth client as the fifth fastest growing open source projects on Github with a 2x change in 2018.

The report also lists the fastest growing topics in which dApp (Decentralized Application) ranked 4th only after Hacktoberfest, pytorch, and machine. Surprisingly ‘Cryptocurrency’ ranked 6thand  ‘smart contracts’ ninth on the list.

Documentation and developer community is really important to help more developers to start building on the networks, Ethereum is the leading smart contract platform the way with more than 3 years of track record and network effects.

The Geth client has had 10,199 commits(which are changes or revisions made to the codebase) so far with 345 contributors. The codebase has had over 21k stars, 7331 forks, and 130 pull requests(proposed change to the repository).

Although Ethereum is leading the way in the smart contract platforms it is still way behind the activity on the Bitcoin core implementation which is thrice as old. The Bitcoin repository has had 18,487 commits with 580 contributors. It has a whopping 35,450 stars and over 21k forks.

The sheer number of commits, however, do not necessarily determine the success or the use cases for the network, comparing the Bitcoin and Ethereum repositories would be like comparing apples to oranges.

Blockmanity’s Take

Github has over 31 Million developers with 96 million repositories which represent more than 95% of all open source code base, so for Ethereum to be growing so fast in popularity on the platform is remarkable and clearly indicated where the developers are flocking.

‘Go where the smart developers are’ still holds good in Crypto space too because ultimately it is the developers who will build the protocols and the applications. Although the price may not reflect the reality, Ethereum is still the king of dApps and is gaining in popularity among the developers.
