Ethereum Builders Speak Out: Why Blockchain Apps Still Can’t Win Everyday Users

Introduction: The Big Gap in Web3

Blockchain technology promised a new world of decentralized apps. But after years of hype, most people still don’t use them. At the recent ETH Denver conference, top Ethereum builders admitted this hard truth. They say the industry built strong tech foundations but forgot to create apps that regular folks love.

This confession highlights a key problem: blockchain apps have failed to win over the masses. Instead of beating popular Web2 tools like Facebook or easy payment apps, Web3 options feel clunky and hard. Let’s dive into what Ethereum leaders said and what it means for the future.

What Happened at ETH Denver?

ETH Denver is a major yearly event for Ethereum developers. It’s where builders gather to share ideas and push Web3 forward. This year, talks shifted from falling crypto prices to real user problems. No more excuses about the market – time to build better products.

Two key speakers led the charge. John Paller, founder of ETH Denver, and Zachary Williamson, co-founder of Aztec Foundation, gave straight talk. Paller praised the tech progress: “We’ve built amazing plumbing systems.” But he added, “We’re epically bad at getting regular people to use simple things.”

“When you look at what we’ve accomplished in 10 years, we have built an amazing amount of technology… But what we’ve actually been epically bad at is getting regular people to use regular things.”

This sums up the issue. Crypto has pipes and wires, but no killer apps.

Infrastructure Yes, Products No

Blockchain excels at secure, decentralized systems. Ethereum powers smart contracts, DeFi, and NFTs. Layer-2 solutions like Aztec add privacy and speed. But these are back-end tools. Front-end apps? They fall short.

Paller explained the original Web3 dream: replace all centralized services with decentralized ones. “Decentralize all the things,” he said. But reality hit hard. Decentralization makes coordination tough. Apps end up slower, costlier, and worse to use.

  • Not cheaper: Gas fees spike during busy times.
  • Not faster: Transactions take minutes, not seconds.
  • Not better UX: Users face confusing interfaces.

People expect new tech to be cheaper, better, faster. Blockchain asks them to switch for ideals alone. That’s a tough sell.

Crypto’s Bad Reputation Holds It Back

Williamson from Aztec didn’t hold back: “Crypto is hated by regular people.” Scams, rug pulls, and casino-like trading dominate headlines. Crime links don’t help. Most see no real-life wins.

Even promising apps flop. Farcaster? It’s a decentralized social network, but not better than Facebook. Web3 payments? Slower and harder than Venmo or PayPal.

“We need apps better than Web2 ones,” Williamson said. Right now, to use any blockchain app, you need crypto knowledge. Wallets, private keys, on-ramps – it’s a pain.

“You have to know about crypto to use a crypto app, because the UX sucks.”

The UX Nightmare: Wallets and Keys

Imagine wanting to send money. In Web2, open an app, tap, done. In Web3:

  1. Get a wallet like MetaMask.
  2. Buy crypto on an exchange.
  3. Transfer to wallet (pay fees).
  4. Connect wallet to app.
  5. Approve transaction (more fees).
  6. Wait for confirmation.

No wonder adoption stalls. Williamson’s fix? Hide the blockchain. “The success case is you don’t have blockchain. You just have apps that use it.” Like how you use Google without thinking about servers.

Lessons from the Early Internet

Paller compared this to the 1990s internet. Back then, conferences obsessed over protocols like TCP/IP. Today? Everyone chats about apps like Instagram or TikTok.

Web3 needs that pivot. Focus on user joy, not tech specs. AI could help big time. Smart agents might handle wallets and keys behind the scenes, making everything seamless.

Market Crash: A Wake-Up Call

With prices down, hype is gone. This is good, say the builders. Williamson noted: too much “bullshit” like memecoins overshadows real value. Now’s the time to build products that deliver.

Examples of hope:

  • Account Abstraction: Ethereum upgrades to simplify logins.
  • Layer-2s: Aztec, Optimism make things cheaper and private.
  • SocialFi: Better decentralized social apps emerging.

Builders must cut the noise. Prioritize UX, real utility, and trust.

What Comes Next for Blockchain Apps?

Mass adoption won’t happen overnight. But steps are clear:

  1. Improve On-Ramps: Easier fiat-to-crypto buys.
  2. Seamless Wallets: Social logins, no seed phrases.
  3. AI Magic: Automate complexity.
  4. Killer Apps: Beat Web2 in speed, cost, fun.

Privacy layers like Aztec show promise. They let users control data without hassle. Combine with AI, and Web3 could sneak into daily life.

The downturn weeds out weak projects. Survivors will build for users, not speculators.

Conclusion: Time to Build for People

Ethereum builders at ETH Denver laid it bare: blockchain apps have failed to win over the masses because they’re not ready for prime time. But admission is the first step. With better UX, hidden tech, and less hype, Web3 can finally deliver.

Watch this space. The next wave of apps might just blend crypto in so well, you won’t notice it’s there. What do you think – can blockchain ever beat Web2? Share in the comments.
