The merchandise store of one of the most popular online games Fortnite has started accepting the privacy based Cryptocurrency Monero (XMR) as payment. Monero was recently added as a payment option to Retail Row which is the merchandise store for Fortnite.
Monero is the only Cryptocurrency chosen by Fortnite even though Globee, the integrated payment gateway supports other major Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC) and XRP. According to Riccardo Spagni who is the lead developer of Monero, Fortnite decided to exclude other Cryptocurrencies due to privacy issues.
This comes as a piece of good news for the adoption of privacy currencies like Monero in the gaming world.
Riccardo Spagni Tweeted:
Riccardo also mentions that the store provider is interested to integrate the Lightning network which is a second layer payment solution on top of Bitcoin, this could restore some of the privacy features that Bitcoin fails to offer.
Fornite and Cryptocurrencies have risen in popularity and are becoming an integral part of our culture especially among millennials. Fortnite which was only launched last year boasts having over 200 Million users whereas Bitcoin which is the prominent Cryptocurrency increased up to $20000 in value in December last year.
Digital native assets are not new to gamers, Fortnite has its own token called V-bucks which can be used as a currency to buy in-game purchases and upgrades. There was a report recently that revealed most of the American teenagers preferred V-bucks or Cryptocurrency as a gift over cash.
The integration of Cryptocurrencies with popular games, however, is yet to happen. It will be interesting to see how upcoming games and existing games use Cryptocurrencies to seamlessly integrate micropayments.
Another interesting application of the Blockchain technology in gaming is NFT (Non-fungible Tokens), which are tokens that have unique identities and are hence fungible. With newer token standards like ERC-721 and ERC-1155 on the Ethereum Blockchain, gaming platforms will be able to allow the full ownership and trading of in-game items like shields or swords.
