Vivien Khoo spent 19 years at Goldman Sachs, rising to managing director. In 2019, she left it all behind. She felt too young to retire but too experienced for another 20 years in the same role. Instead, she took a big leap. She became interim CEO and global chief operating officer at BitMEX, a crypto exchange facing tough regulatory issues.
Khoo did not jump in because she loved blockchain from day one. Her strength was in compliance and regulation from traditional finance. She saw it as a chance to build a new career. But what hit her hard was the loneliness. At Goldman, she had mentors everywhere. In crypto, she was one of the few women leaders, and from old-school finance too.
The crypto world is still mostly men. Women hold few top jobs and make up little of the users. Data shows only 13% of Web3 startups have a female founder. Just 3% of teams are all women. Traditional finance has fewer women at the top too, but crypto is worse. Tech and trading backgrounds keep many women out.
Why does this matter? Diversity brings fresh ideas. It helps the industry grow strong and fair. More women mean better products for everyone.
After two years at BitMEX, Khoo acted. In 2022, she co-founded Web3Women (W3W), a nonprofit. It helps pro women move into Web3. They offer mentorship, education, and sponsorship. Many early members have moved on successfully. Now, W3W plans to focus on those ready for long-term roles.
“Women’s representation in financial institutions tends to taper off at senior levels. Still, the sector fares better than crypto.”
Khoo also launched W3W University in Hong Kong in 2024. It’s a key step to train more women.
Crypto is growing up. It’s more legit now. Khoo serves on Hong Kong’s Web3 task force and stablecoin review group. Back when she started, people joked crypto was for drug users or money launderers. Not anymore.
The field is shifting from wild “island business” to a structured ecosystem. Regulators worldwide are aligning rules. This leads to consolidation.
Demographics are changing too. Early crypto was young – ages 17 to 35. Khoo was one of the oldest. Now, big players like Franklin Templeton do tokenization. TradFi pros in their 40s and 50s join in.
Khoo has clear advice:
“I left Goldman in my 40s after almost two decades in a senior role and entered crypto with no prior experience. If I could make that shift, anyone can do it.”
Her story proves it’s possible. No tech background needed. Bring your strengths from elsewhere.
As crypto matures, more doors open for women. Groups like W3W lead the way. They build networks and skills. Expect more women founders, leaders, and users.
Benefits are huge: Innovation speeds up. Risks drop with diverse views. The industry attracts top talent from all fields.
Hong Kong pushes Web3 hard. With leaders like Khoo, it could become a hub for inclusive crypto growth.
Crypto offers freedom. No old rules hold you back. Build DAOs, NFTs, DeFi – your way. Women bring unique skills in compliance, ops, and community building.
Join events, online courses, or groups like W3W. Start small. Network. The shift Khoo made shows age or background don’t matter.
The movement is here. Be part of it.
| Metric | Percentage |
