Nepal has a fresh start with its new, youth-led government. This millennial-driven leadership is tech-savvy and ready to make bold moves. One big decision on the table: should Nepal dive into Web3, cryptocurrency, and blockchain? Right now, all crypto activities are banned by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). Breaking the rules can lead to fines, asset seizures, and even jail time.
But is this ban smart? Many experts say no. It’s time for Nepal to rethink its stance on crypto in Nepal and open doors to innovation.
The NRB ban stems from fears of money laundering, terror funding, tax evasion, and scams. They worry people will lose money on volatile digital assets. Enforcement falls to the cybercrime unit, but with fuzzy laws and low tech know-how, it’s hard to stop underground trading.
Blockchain pro Bijay Bogati calls it out: “This comes from not understanding the tech.” Despite the ban, Nepalis are active in Web3. Developers build in secret, scared of risks.
Countries worldwide are adopting Web3. Here’s proof it works:
| Country | Web3 Move | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| El Salvador | Bitcoin as legal tender + ATMs | Tourism up 22%, easy remittances |
| Bhutan | Mines Bitcoin with hydro power | $1.4B in BTC (40% GDP), higher salaries, less brain drain |
| USA | Strategic Bitcoin reserve announced | Government holds BTC for future |
| France | Recognizes crypto | Boosts innovation |
Bhutan started mining in 2019 when BTC was $5K. Now at $70K+, they hold 13,000 BTC. They use clean hydro energy, perfect for Nepal too.
Nepal has tons of cheap, green hydro power, especially in monsoons. Mountains provide natural cooling for mining rigs.
Challenges? Winter shortages, high setup costs, BTC price swings. But Bitcoin has survived 15+ years of crashes.
Nepal draws millions of tourists. Accept crypto payments like Bhutan (100+ coins for hotels/flights), and watch high-earning digital nomads flock in.
Remittances are huge: $11B+ yearly from 5M overseas Nepalis. Crypto cuts 4% fees, like in the Philippines. Unofficial flows could be even bigger.
Nepal’s tech exports hit $1B last year. GenZ voters picked young leaders fluent in tech.
Superteam Nepal, led by Raunak Raj Rauniyar, runs hackathons. They find hungry talent outside Kathmandu. Women participation? Up to 30% from 10%.
Examples:
“Talent exists, but fear holds them back,” says Bogati.
New gov’t promises less graft. Use blockchain:
This appeals to IMF/World Bank, unlike corrupt mega-projects.
Dangers: BTC crashes, energy use bans, quantum threats. But track record is strong. Diversify beyond BTC. Signal to world: Nepal is open for tech biz, jobs stay home.
With a 35-year-old PM and stable rule ahead, now’s the moment. End the crypto ban in Nepal, mine with surplus power, build on local talent. Reap jobs, revenue, trust. Nepal’s future starts today.
