Major tech companies like ApplePay & Salesforce are making blockchain plays

Recently a slew of developments has been creating a buzz in the crypto space recently. This involves companies like Apple & Salesforce respectively.

Apple

Rumor has it that Apple will introduce a payment request API for its ApplePay system which may implement the Interledger Protocol developed by Ripple.in Safari for the operating system iOS.

The Interledger payment method is a protocol that initiates and processes payments among different DLTs.

According to the Interledger website

Like routers on the Internet, connectors route packets of money across independent payment networks. The open architecture and minimal protocol enable interoperability for any value transfer system.

Its GitHub project reads as follows:

“This specification defines the ‘interledger’ payment method for use, for instance, with the Payment Request API. With it merchants can request a payment that follows the Interledger standards.”

It was developed by Ripple Labs and was later spun off as an open source project. However, it was taken up  by the W3C community.

Salesforce

In an interview with Business Insider, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and co-founder Parker Harris revealed that the company is working on a blockchain product.

Salesforce is most famous for its cloud based CRM (Customer Relationship Management) with which it became the no.1 CRM platform in the world. It later diversified into a range of cloud computing solutions as well. As per FY2017-18 figures, its revenue was sitting at $ 10.48 billion.

Benioff recalled a story at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland where an unexpected event led him to think about how blockchain could be used as part of the Salesforce offerings

“I had been thinking a lot about what is Salesforce’s strategy around blockchain, and what is Salesforce’s strategies around cryptocurrencies and how will we relate to all of these things,” Benioff said.

“I hope by Dreamforce we will have a blockchain and cryptocurrency solution.”

Dreamforce is the annual customer conference organized by Salesforce. This year it will be organized in September.
